I get up before the sun
At the time that still feels like night
And clap my hands so that I know
That you haven’t left me for good.
I’ll snap my fingers
begging for a response or
I’ll hum softly just for you
And only when I am sure that you
haven’t decided to leave
can I ever be calmed again
But it doesn’t last
Every evening while the world rests
I worry that tomorrow you won’t be there
So I ruffle the sheets
Just to be certain that
I know what is going on.
