Barely on the other side of young

Underground like a cicada
for 17 years buried in someone else’s ground
you emerge one day, stripped away
a peppery smug undercurrent of disdain abounds
remember happiness and the search
looking for it from a grasshopper’s perch
remember when you thought it was
in the eyes and arms of him or her
remember when you hoped it could
be purchased with credit on the home shopping network
remember when you knew for sure
an empty shot glass would help you visualize it
and now you see exactly
now that all your friends have families
now that the music is too loud
and you stopped buying lace panties
that you were walking around with it in your back pocket
the entire time you’ve existed
and when they say if I knew then what I know now
suddenly makes sense, like classical music
you can’t go back again, and why would you
no guarantee you’d choose wiser anyhow…
On the surface like an earthworm
with two microscopic brains
the one you lost and the one you found
that peppery smug disdain abounds
