In the blood

He walks into the room and asks me
Mom
Have you heard the new Alicia Keys?
Ain’t no accidents, ain’t no accidents…
He goes on, I know that you like her
because you always listen to her songs
and I just wondered
Have you heard the new Alicia Keys?
And I remember the first person who asked me that
And for him I said no
So we took a long drive, at night, I can’t remember where we were going
It didn’t matter because
Ain’t no accidents, aint no accidents…
And he looked so grown up
shiny watches and rings
smelled like a department store
driving, just so we could listen to her latest CD
no destination just melodies
no motive just the music
And I tried not to stare at him
I tried not to pretend that every song she sang
He wasn’t quietly saying that I should sing them to him
I memorized all of them and when he wasn’t around
If I heard them, he was the only person who came to mind
And here he is again on the edge of my brain
In a karmic circular fashion
And although we aren’t together
Ain’t no accidents, aint no accidents…
My child looks so grown up
And smells like a department store
With no idea where he got the ideas from
So its just the funniest thing to me
That his son would come to me
That my son would come to me
And ask me, looking just like him
The very same question.
Of course I’ve heard the songs but just for him
Again I say no
So he can play them for me
Like I am supposed to do…..
